Millennials are Shaping the Home Design World
Home designs constantly change. What’s popular one year may not be popular the next, leaving you pretty quickly with an outdated home. The best thing to do is catch a trend early on to give your home plenty of time to breathe and become a comfortable living space before the trend begins to shift again.
According to the National Kitchen & Bath Association, millennials (those born between 1980 and the early 2000’s) are the homeowners who currently have the most impact on popular design trends. Millennials have a unique perspective on life and how it should be lived, and this life view is starting to shape how homes are being designed and built.
There is a steady decrease in demand for home upgrades from boomers and an increase in demand from millennial homeowners, which is why millennials have a growing influence on overall home design trends. Let’s look at a few design trends that are being powered by millennials in 2022.
Saving the Planet
Millennials are all about saving the planet. Because of this, millennial homeowners drive the trend of organic, natural, and wood materials, styles, and looks in their homes. Having that all-natural look is very important. You find more recycled materials such as wood hoods and cabinetry with natural wood grain.

Expect designs that incorporate nature with textiles and colors. For example, we see natural stone more common in bathroom designs, especially in the case where a single stone is selected for multiple uses in the same area like on the walls and floor.
Easy Access
Simpler integrated systems are a must for millennial homeowners. In the kitchen, millennials look for extra space for work, touchless fixtures, easy to clean surfaces, and access to outdoor living areas. They are interested in mobile-friendly spaces, healthy cooking elements, app-controlled appliances, and voice activated lighting.
In bathrooms, millennials want large showers so are most likely to remove the bathtub to get this space. They also remove bathtubs to make room for more storage and dressing area space. Millennials are very interested in products that are energy and water efficient, and they want connected products such as water temperature controls, entertainment, and communication.
