If you’re searching Houzz for anything carpet-related, you’ll find one of our projects featured in an editorial ideabook. The ideabook is all about picking the right carpet shape for your living space. The featured project is a photo (courtesy of Blaine Johnathan Photography) of the living room of our Vue Sarasota penthouse build-out (see the entire project here), which features a large, oval-shaped rug.

The original editorial was written by Houzz Italia contributor, Antonella Natalis. You can see the entire editorial below in the blurb. As the original editorial is written in Italian, you can read the translated excerpt with our project in the rest of this blog.

A carpet is a choice that will change the look of the living room for a while. Formatting and measuring are the first things to consider. Even if the choice is “infected” with the trend of the moment, from the attraction to a product seen online or beautifully set in a shop window, the attention to be paid in the choice is not a trivial matter because it can create a perfect “climate”, a neat and “wow” effect, but also negatively affect the overall appearance of the room.

Experts always advise to make sure that the carpet is not too small or too big and to understand it, they propose to help themselves with the trick of the insiders, that is, to lay scotch paper on the floor to simulate the area in which it should be positioned. Let’s see the pros and cons of some options and the advice of the designers.

Oval rugs have great appeal and can also be very functional. Pro Annalisa Carli shares her thoughts: “In my opinion, there is no preferred shape. There is the right shape for every environment, but I really love oval rugs, and I use them often, especially lately in my restyling projects.”

Gaia Rodolico also leaves her opinion: “Oval rugs must adapt to the shapes of the room and above all, to the shapes of the furnishings to which they are related. The elongated shape is suitable for a living area with sofas and armchairs of similar shapes. Oval rugs attract attention in a room by creating a beautiful harmony, and the secret is knowing how to choose the right proportions and combine them with similarly shaped furnishings. In an elegant dining room, an oval table with a matching oval rug underneath is a choice of sure scenic effect.”
